Background

 

19th November 1962 marks an important milestone in the history of the People's Association. It was the day when Hock Choon Village Community Centre (now called Fuchun Community Club) located at the end of Lorong Chikar, now Woodlands St. 13, in the vicinity of the current Block 102, officially opened it doors to be The First Rural Community Centre under PA’s wings. Named after a village of about 150 households, the community centre was opened by none other than the first Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. For Photo: Click Here

 

In 1981, due to the development of Woodlands New Town, Hock Choon Village was demolished and Hock Choon Village CC closed its doors the same year.

 

On 1 December 1988, the CC was re-opened at a shop unit at block 167 Woodlands Street 11.  After consultations with Mr. Lee Yiok Seng, then Member of Parliament for Bukit Panjang, it was decided that the name 'Hock Choon' be retained albeit in its Mandarin version. It was renamed Fuchun Community Centre.   Mr. Ng Ah Kau was appointed as Chairman of the CC's new management committee.

 

Mr. Rahim Rashad, who joined the CCMC in 1990 and was the first Chairman of Fuchun CC MAEC, recalled the active participation of Malay residents in Silat activities in the early 90's. Silat Kuningan group of the CC even represented Singapore in the World Silat Championship held in Terengganu, Malaysia, in 1992. 

 

Launch of Fuchun CC MAEC to First Half of 2002

 

After the General Elections of 1997, Fuchun CC and Marsiling CC are placed under Marsiling Constituency. The Advisor for both CCs is Mr Hawazi Daipi, now Senior Parliamentary Secretary for Ministry of Manpower and MP for Sembawang GRC.

Due to constraints of space at Fuchun CC former location at block 167 Woodlands Street 11, events and activities of Fuchun CC MAEC were held at the front porch of the CC or neighbouring void decks. Nevertheless, despite these constraints, we organised many events between 1997 to first half of 2002.

 

Fuchun CC MAEC – The First MAEC With A Website

 

On 10 May 2000, with the initiative of the current Chairman of Fuchun CC MAEC, Mr Yahya Hamid, who took over as chairman in year 2000, the MAEC launched its website and became the first Malay Activity Executive Committee of a community centre or club in Singapore to ever published its own website.

·                    Pesta Bahasa & Budaya 2006 / Malay Language & Cultural Fiesta. Sempena Bulan Bahasa 2006 In Conjunction With Malay Language Month 2006. The main event was held on 29 July 2006 at Fuchun CC. It was organized jointly with Marsiling CC MAEC. The organising committee was chaired by Mr Yahya Hamid, Chairman, Fuchun CC MAEC. Three contests were held earlier on 8 July and 15 July at Marsiling and Fuchun CC respectively. Audience: 800

·                        E-Forum: Bahas Bahasa – The Language Debate - Organised in conjunction with Malay Language Month 2006. The Forum is located at:

It was launched on 7 June 2006.

 

·                        Arca Gemilang 2006 – Karaoke Contest. The second year we are organizing this contest. The Contest was held over 2 days: Preliminary Round (16 April) & Final (29 April).

 

This year's contest attracted a good 71 contestants from all over Singapore. All contestants were given full opportunity to present their talent in front of a full-house audience during the preliminary round. Only 16 solo and 4 duet contestants made it to the Final. Based on the Judges' comments, the standard and quality of the competition was very high this year. With the aim of providing a guide for contestants to improve their performance further, we sent each contestant his or her Judges' score and comments by post.

 

Some special features of the Contest are: 1. Qualifiers to the Final and Winners of the Contest were decided upon based on their total aggregate position given by all 3 judges. Thus, the contestant in the final with the lowest total aggregate position is the Winner. 2. Video clip of each finalist was presented before the contestant did his/her song presentation. This carried a maximum of 10 marks. 3. Each finalist had to pick an impromtu question from an envelope and answer it verbally after his or her song presentation. This portion carried a maximum of 10 marks and was taken as the X-factor that Judges were looking for. Audience: 400.

·               Malay Traditional Dance Workshop. Fuchun CC MAEC was the first MAEC to receive MESRA’s Cultural Grant. The grant was used to organized the dance workshop.

 

The 1-day workshop was held on Saturday, 25 February 2006, from 10 am – 6 pm at Fuchun Community Club, Singapore.

 

The Presenters & Instructors were Mr Khalid Mohd Noor, a Well-known Artistic Dance Instructor & Choreographer from Istana Budaya (Palace of Culture), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Mr Rizman Kassim, Chief Dance Instructor, Choreographer & Event Coordinator Artiste Seni Budaya Tepak Sireh Malay Heritage Centre, Singapore. They were supported by Dance Artistes of Seni Budaya Tepak Sireh.

On Wednesday, 31 August 2005, Fuchun CC MAEC, with the support of the People's Association & MESRA, the Coordinating Council for MAECs, was honoured to be given the opportunity to host, for the third time, a Dialogue Session of PM's National Day Rally Speech. ·         DPM Lee Hsien Loong's Visit to Fuchun CC on Sunday, 2 March 2003. On 2nd March 2003, Fuchun CC was indeed honoured to receive the Honourable Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as Guest of Honour at its new premises at Woodlands St 31. A closed-door dialogue session, chaired by Mr Hawazi Daipi, Parliamentary Secretary (Education) and MP for Sembawang GRC, was also held with DPM Lee answering numerous questions raised by grassroot leaders. www.persadaku.org

  • Hari Raya Haji Gathering. February 2001. This kind of gathering is rarely, or even never, organized by any MAEC. This is the first time we organized this event. Two other occasions that we organized this kind of event were in 2005 and this year, 2006. www.persadaku.org/aidiladha01.html

 

·         Mendaki Workshop & Exhibition. Mathematique Funtastique - Maths Carnival was organised by Yayasan Mendaki on 2 September, 2001, at Suntec City. A bus-load of Fuchun CC MAEC attended the event. As a prelude to the Carnival, a workshop for parents entitled 'Workshop for Parents: Tutoring Lower Primary Mathematics' was organised jointly by Mendaki and Fuchun CC MAEC at Marsiling CC on 1 September 2001. www.persadaku.org/mendaki_workshop.html

 

·         Syahur (Early Morning Breakfast) & Visit to Geylang Hari Raya Charity Bazaar. While organizing Iftar (Breaking of Fast) is common, as far as we know, Syahur i.e. early morning breakfast before the start of the fasting day, has never been organized by any MAEC. On the 9th of December 2001, MAEC organised a trip to Geylang Hari Raya Bazaar and then followed by breakfast at 2 a.m. or Syahur at Sembawang Satay Club. We had a great time belting out Hari Raya songs on the  bus' karaoke on the way to the two destinations and did some good shopping. As in previous years when we organised the breaking of fast, the objective of the event is to develop family spirit among members and residents as well as to donate to Tabung Amal Aidilfitri while doing the shopping at Geylang Bazaar. www.persadaku.org/syahur.html

 

·         Hari Raya Celebration with the Family @ Void Deck of Block 169 Woodlands St 13. The first time we have ever organized a Hari Raya Celebration on our own. On 5 January 2002, Fuchun CC MAEC organised Mesra Aidilfitri Bersama Keluarga at a modest void deck at Block 171 Woodlands St 13. Despite this, it was a truly enjoyable evening particularly for the kids. The theme of the event was focused more for the family and it was heart-warming to meet many families with little children at the occasion. Here's a photo tribute to those who came and those who helped organised the event. God willing, an even bigger event is planned for next year when the new six-storey Fuchun CC building is ready.   • Malam Keindahan Bahasa & Budaya - Malay Language & Cultural Nite 2002 @ the new Fuchun CC premises at Woodlands St.31. The first time Fuchun CC MAEC organized an event in conjunction with Malay Language Month and the first sub-group of Fuchun CC to organize a major event at Fuchun CC’s new premises.   • Marsiling National Day Observance Ceremony & Racial Harmony Day 2002. The organising committee was chaired by Mr Yahya Hamid, Chairman, Fuchun CC MAEC. The first time My Yahya Hamid was assigned to organize a major event at constituency level. www.persadaku.org/Marsiling_NDay_RH02.html

 

·         Dialogue Session on PM’s National Day Rally Speech. The first time Fuchun CC MAEC hosted this dialogue session. On Friday, 20 September 2002, Fuchun CC MAEC, with the support of the People's Association, was honoured to be given the opportunity of organising a Discussion on the Prime Minister's National Day Rally Speech. We were pleased to receive as our honourable guests and panelists Mayor Othman Haron Eusofe, MP for Marine Parade GRC; Mayor Zainul Abidin Rasheed, MP for Aljunied GRC; Mr Ahmad Khalis, MP for Bukit Batok GRC; Dr Maliki Osman, MP for Sembawang GRC (Admiralty) & Mr Hawazi Daipi, Parliamentary Secretary (Education) & our MP for Sembawang GRC (Marsiling). The event was attended by 200 community leaders from grassroots organisations and mosques. We organized 2 other similar dialogue sessions i.e. in 2004 and 2005. ·         5th Annual Family Picnic with Old Folks of PERTAPIS. On Sunday, 14 April 2002, Fuchun CC MAEC organised its 5th Annual Family Picnic at East Coast Park. It is our intention to include as often as possible the less fortunate among us in all activities or events that we organise. This year we invited old folks from PERTAPIS Senior Citizens' Home as Special Guests who were entertained by each family participant at the picnic. www.persadaku.org/picnic02.html

 

  • Fuchun Day 2002. On Sunday, 27 October 2002, Fuchun Community Club organised  Fuchun Day 2002 cum an open house at its new premises at Woodlands St. 31. Fuchun CC MAEC members were in full force to make the event a success. There were kompang, Malay dance & senaman tradisional demos, all participated by youngsters of the MAEC.
